Byelection in Jharkhand put off

RANCHI FEB. 25. Election to the Poreyahat Assembly in Jharkhand was put off to March 24 owing to inadequate policemen on duty, the Chief Electoral Officer of the State, A.K. Pandey, said today.

The Election Commission was not satisfied with the final report as the number of policemen required for security fell short of the guidelines.

Eight armed policemen and two lathi-wielding men were needed to man each of the 253 booths, which was not available.

The Election Commission yesterday deferred the bypoll to March 24 following the mass casual leave taken by policemen on the directive of the Jharkhand Men's Police Association in support of their grievances.
