'Existing norms for bottled drinking water okay'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Feb. 25. The Consumer Affairs Minister, Sharad Yadav, today asserted that there was nothing wrong with the existing standards for bottled drinking water and that products manufactured as per the standards were "entirely fit for human consumption''.

In a suo motu statement in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Yadav said the standards were being revised only because they could not remain static and were open to further improvements. The standards are reviewed as a policy once every five years in the normal course and were in any case due in the middle of this year, he added.

According to existing standards, the pesticide residue should be below detectable limits when tested by a technique specified under the norms.
