Save water campaign launched

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR FEB. 25. In a major step towards efficient utilisation of drinking water, the district administration has proposed to prosecute those who pump out water from drinking water sources to their crops.

Speaking after launching the save water campaign here today at a meeting of nodal officers and mandal parishad development officers, the District Collector, B. Rajsekhar, directed nodal officers, mandal officers and RDOs to register criminal cases against the persons who try to divert water from the drinking water sources to their fields. He expressed dismay over non-action against those who were drawing water for their fields from the pumping mains of the Government drinking water sources. He told officials to enforce the Water, Land and Tress Act in its true spirit.

The Collector released posters and pamphlets on the save water campaign and inaugurated the kalajathas for the purpose. Special gram sabhas would be conducted in villages for a week from tomorrow on drought conditions, he stated.

The district received only 50 per cent of its normal annual rainfall, which was very meagre forcing fast depletion of groundwater table. While the groundwater table was 6.7 meters during January 2002, it had gone down to 12 meters this year. He also mentioned that the number of seasonal borewells stood at 360 in January against just 12 last year.

He stressed the need to utilise the little available groundwater efficiently to arrest its fast depletion. He asked nodal teams to create awareness among people about the optimum utilisation of available water without any wastage.

The campaign was based on the theme of `some water for more than more water for some.' The Collector asked officials to involve all sections of society in the campaign to make it a success. The nodal teams were also instructed to create awareness on the removal of about 20,000 illegal tap connections in the district.

Mr. Rajsekhar said removal of illegal taps would save water required for two months in the district. Steps were also being taken to ensure supply of drinking water through tankers to the habitations in the tail-end of water supply schemes, which were not getting water.

The Joint Collector, C. Parthasarathi, the Project Director of DDP, C. Suvarna, and others participated.
