Announcing this the Executive Director, GM Global Engineering, John Cohoon, said the engineering wing would conduct projects for export in critical areas such as computer aided design (CAD), computer aided engineering (CAE) and computer aided manufacturing, while research and development will focus on high value work to complement present research programmes and undertake new exploratory research projects. He said over the next three years the company planned to invest over $60 million and would have about 260 professionals in 12-18 months of operation. The centre, located at the International Technology Park, Whitefield, would bring GM India into GM's global engineering network. "We are now able to engage the high quality, skilled Indian engineering talent to help support our global portfolio". The centre, he added, would run two shifts, enabling a 24-hour global engineering organisation. The Chief Minister, S. M. Krishna, who was present at the press conference, said he was happy that GM was making this kind of investment in Karnataka and the State Government would extend all possible assistance to investors.
