Budget session of Legislature begins tomorrow

Bangalore Feb. 25. The Governor, Triloki Nath Chaturvedi, will address the joint session of the Legislature at the Vidhana Soudha at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The Budget session, which will be the sixth session of the 11th Assembly, will sit for 22 days up to March 31.

The Secretary to the Legislative Assembly, T. Rajanna, told presspersons here today that the joint session would adjourn for the day after the Governor's address. The Assembly and the Council would meet from February 28.

The major event of the session would be the presentation of the Budget for 2003-04 by the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, who also holds the finance portfolio.

He said that there were 13 bills for the consideration of the Assembly. They are the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka Abolition of Beggary (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka State Open University (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka Educational Institutions (Capitation Fee Abolition) Bill, two Karnataka Municipalities (Amendment) Bills, the Karnataka Mahanagara Palike (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka State Civil Services (Amendment) Bill, the Karnataka Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill, and the Karnataka Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill.

Two other Bills — the Karnataka Home Guards (Amendment) Bill, 2003 and the Karnataka Inland Fisheries (Conservation, Development and Control) Bill, 1996 — were pending before the Assembly.

Five Bills already passed by the Legislative Council would come up for consideration before the Assembly.

There is also a private member's Bill to be considered.
