`Career planning should start early'

By Our Special Correspondent

GADAG Feb. 25. Ashok Chachadi, Professor of Management of the Kausali Institute of Business Management of the Karnatak University and the Head of the Karnatak University Information and Employment Guidance Bureau, has urged that career planning and guidance should start from the secondary school level instead of the college level as is being done now.

He was delivering the keynote address at a workshop of the headmasters of high schools of Gadag District on "Personality Development and Career Planning'' organised under the auspices of the K.H.Patil Centre for Human Excellence and the Deputy Director of Public Instructions at Hulkoti near here on Tuesday. Khazi, Deputy Director of Public Instructions (in-charge), presided over the function.

Dr. Chachadi was of the view that guidance on career planning given at the college level was a little late as in most cases the course of a student's career would have been decided. It was necessary that parents were involved in career planning and guidance exercises and it should be done after assessing the aptitude and inclination of students.

It was necessary that students should be prevailed upon to pursue a course of study with a definite purpose and goal and not select any without rhyme or reason. The main responsibility for creating necessary awareness rested with teachers who should be given periodical orientation in this connection. It would be worthwhile for teachers to undertake teaching for five days in a week and devote the sixth day for discussion on career planning, he said.

Vijayalakshmi of the Department of Psychology of Karnatak University, and Vanahalli, former chief of the University Guidance Bureau, spoke.

Earlier, M.Madan Mohan, journalist, inaugurated the workshop.

Abdul Kareem, Principal of the Swami Vivekanand Pre-university Science College, Hulkoti, welcomed the gathering.

Wing Commander (retd.) Ramamurthy, Coordinator of the K.H.Patil Centre for Human Excellence, proposed a vote of thanks.
