`Proposal on bridge will be considered on priority'

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN FEB. 25. H.C.Srikantaiah, Revenue and district in-charge Minister, said on Monday that a proposal to build a bridge across the Cauvery between Basavapatna and Rudrapatna in Arkalgud taluk would be considered on priority and other pending development work in the taluk would be taken up.

The minister, who was inaugurating various development works in Arkalgud, said the Congress Government was committed to keep its promises, including providing reservation for women and social justice.

Mr. Srikantiah said the Government had taken steps to combat drought, which was bothering the State in the past three years.

Admitting his differences with the Hassan MP, G.Puttaswamy Gowda, in the past, the minister clarified that now there were no differences between them and they were working together for the development in the district.

While defending the admission of the MLAs expelled from the BJP into the Congress, including, A.Manju and B.B. Shivappa, he said that Mr. Puttaswamy Gowda was instrumental in admitting them and the Congress would welcome those who believed in its ideology and commitment.

Mr. Puttaswamy Gowda regretted that grants released to municipalities and zilla panchayats were being misused and officials had failed in their duty. He directed the authorities concerned to take up the drinking water project in Basavapatna.

If the zilla panchayat could not make budgetary provision for the purpose, he would help through the MP's Area Development Fund, he said.

Mr. Puttaswamy Gowda, while promising help for other development works in the taluk, criticised the former prime minister, H.D.Deve Gowda, for his recent "concern" for farmers.

Mr. Srikantiah said that all efforts would be made to construct a cricket stadium in Krishna Nagar and a Ranaji match would be held in the stadium next year.

Participating in a function organized by the Government Arts and Science College, he said houses would be constructed in Krishna Nagar soon.

He said the students should concentrate on studies along with extracurricular activities.

The Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Lucos Vallathrai, said that a new course, "Tili", would be started at pre-university level in the next academic year.
