Politics-driven

Sir, — This has reference to the article "A quota-driven polity" by Neera Chandhoke (Feb. 18). Over the years, "reservation" has become the shibboleth that is used unsparingly by politicians to garner votes. While some sort of reservation is necessary for those who have remained condemned to years of misery, poverty, servitude and slavery, it is the proclivity of the creamy layer to forever benefit from the quota that is unacceptable. In a sense, the entire reservation policy has led to a polemical situation where, on the one hand, the creamy layers have ensured that the benefits of reservation are perpetuated, while, on the other, it has led to the privileged class or the dominant caste too demanding reservation in return for votes. The reservation policy has boomeranged — the cause it was meant to serve has got lost in the wilderness of petty politics.
