Akademi chief

New Delhi Feb.17. In one of the most politically-charged elections for the post of president of Sahitya Akademi, Gopichand Narang, a well-known Urdu literary critic, defeated Jnanpith award winner, Mahashweta Devi, here today. The contest saw Mr. Narang comfortably sailing to victory with 56 votes in his favour out of the total 94 votes polled. Mahashweta Devi, seen as a left candidate, got 38 votes. — PTI
