Govt. files objections over changes in Assembly segments

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI FEB. 13. Unmindful of the panic among senior party leaders over draft proposals of the Delimitation Commission, the Delhi Government today conveyed to the Commission that by and large it agreed with the changes proposed in the reorganisation of the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the Capital. However, it filed certain objections pertaining to changes in the blocks of certain Assembly segments.

The Delhi Industry and Election Minister, Deep Chand Bandhu, led a delegation comprising party MLAs Mukesh Sharma and Zile Singh Chauhan and put forth its views on the draft proposals. "We have welcomed the changes being made in the seven Lok Sabha constituencies by the Commission as the present geographical boundaries are irrational and needed to be set right in order to have an equal share of Assembly seats in all the constituencies. The Government's view has been presented by Mr. Bandhu to the Commission today and only changes have been sought in a few Assembly segments,'' the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, told newspersons later.

Stating that the entire exercise of the Commission was welcome as a number of discrepancies had shown up in the constitution of the seven Lok Sabha seats in the past, the Chief Minister said that objections had been filed by a few Congress MLAs including Mr.Chauhan, Surinder Kumar and Arvinder Singh Lovely. While both Mr. Chauhan's and Mr. Kumar's constituencies are being turned into reserved seats, Mr.Lovely has certain objections on five blocks in East Seelampur village. These MLAs have filed their objections with the Commission and the Government has backed their claim, she added.

In his representation, Mr. Lovely has contended that five blocks in the 7th charge Census have been merged with the Krishna Nagar Assembly seat during the last two Assembly polls despite the fact that they were part of the Gandhi Nagar constituency during the Metropolitan Council days. He has sought removal of these four islands which was causing a lot of confusion in the minds of the local people as they still continue to write Gandhi Nagar as their postal address despite being part of Krishna Nagar segment.

At the meeting with the Delimitation Commission today, the Congress MLA Mukesh Sharma sharply objected to the proposed changes sought by the Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, in certain Assembly segments in his area. Mr. Zile Singh Chauhan went ahead and filed his objection with regard to the Bhalaswa Jehangirpuri seat which is proposed to be turned into a reserved constituency.
