Councillor's membership terminated

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI FEB. 13. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi at its meeting held in Town Hall today terminated the membership of the controversial Councillor from Keshav Puram, Sharda Jain, who is now imprisoned in Tihar Jail here on charges of murder of the senior Congress Councillor from Tri Nagar, Atma Ram Gupta, in August last year.

A resolution in this regard was passed by the House after it was informed by the Municipal Secretary's Office about continued absence of Ms. Jain from its meetings without any information for more than five months.

As per Section 33(2) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, the House has the power to declare a councillor's seat vacant if the member is absent from meetings for three consecutive months. It was on August 12, 2002, that Sharda Jain last attended the House meeting. Thereafter she has been absent from Corporation meetings without taking any permission from the House.
