Indian challenge ends

NEW DELHI Feb. 13. The Indian challenge at the All England badminton championships in London ended on the very first day with all the four contestants crashing out in the opening round itself.

Abhinn Shyam Gupta, Chetan Anand and Nikhil Kanetkar in the men's section and Aparna Popat in the women's section lost their first round matches against more fancied opponents, according to information reaching here.

Gupta went down in straight sets, 5-15, 5-15 to the 16th seeded Shon Seung-Mo of Korea, while Kanetkar managed to pull off a set against Hidetaka Yamada of Japan, the 15th seed, before losing 8-15, 15-7, 6-15. Chetan Anand lost 9-15, 6-15 to Wu Yunyong of China.

Popat pushed her Dutch rival Judit Meulendiiks to wits end playing some steady game before bowing out 4-11 11-8 10-13. — PTI
