Rajesh, Amit dominate day one

CHENNAI FEB. 13. Rajesh Choudhary of Army Yachting Node (Mumbai) and Amit Arvind of Naval Sailing Club (Mumbai) won two out of three races each in the full rig and radial classes respectively on Thursday, the opening day of the Bengal Tiger Line-Laser Coastal Nationals, being organised by the Royal Madras Yacht Club, in the open sea outside the Harbour here.

It also turned out to be a memorable day for the host club, with its sailors Sandeep Srikanth finishing second in two races while winning the third in the full rig and young Rohit Ashok clinching the second spot in all three races in the radial class.

The wind, shifty for most part, was on the light side in the first two races and that placed competitors with slighter builds at an advantage.

Choudhary, 29, displayed good steering control and the fact that he is light enabled the bronze medallist (radial class) at the last Asian Games carry better upwind speed. This made the difference in his tussles with 21-year-old Sandeep, the two-time Laser National champion and National Games gold medallist, with the downwind legs pretty close.

The third race saw stronger winds and though Choudhary had the better start in the six-boat fleet, Sandeep gained better upwind speed. Hereabout, Choudhary capsized and it was Sandeep all the way.

Radial class - Race I: 1. P.P. Madhu (AYN), 2. Rohit Ashok (RMYC), 3. Amit Arvind (Naval Sailing Club, Mumbai).

Race II: 1. Amit Arvind, 2. Rohit Ashok (RMYC), 3. Meenu Dahiya (Corps of Engineering Sailing Club, Pune).

Race III: 1. Amit Arvind, 2. Rohit Ashok, 3. P.P. Madhu.
