Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
This technology allows an Ongole cow to produce up to 70 calves in her lifetime as compared to the 10 under normal conditions of breeding. Speaking to the press here on Thursday, Mutha Ram, the scientist who led this effort, said this was accomplished in one year with a budget of Rs. 36 lakhs funded by the World Bank. He said compared to the usual conception rate of 20 to 40 per cent from frozen embryos, they managed to achieve a successful conception rate of 60 per cent using non- surgical methods. Under this the cow is given hormones which induce her to produce extra gametes which are fertilized using a pure Ongole bull. After seven days these fertilized embryoes are taken from her womb and transferred into the womb of "surrogate'' cows.
