The state-of-the-art laboratories have been established at a cost of about Rs.30 lakhs. The TREC-STEP is one of the four institutions imparting skill development training in unconventional and emerging technology sectors, which offer good employment potential, under the UNDP-DST sponsored project. While the TREC-STEP is offering the short-term training programme in modern appliances maintenance, the Vivekananda Institute of Bio-Technology, Nimpith, West Bengal, has been identified for providing training in biotechnology including tissue culture, floriculture and vermi-composting. The Centre for Research and Industrial Staff Performance, Bhopal, and the Electronic Service and Training Centre, Ram Nagar, Uttaranchal, offer training programmes on multiskill development and computer hardware-office equipment maintenance respectively. About Rs. 3 crores has been sanctioned under the UNDP for the three-year project, which comes to a close by December. Speaking to the media after declaring open the laboratories, the DST Advisor, H. K. Mittal, said a total of 800 persons would be trained under the project through the four centres. Besides, 200 master trainers would undergo the skill development programme and in turn, train more personnel. The DST would explore the feasibility of replicating the models in other places wherever there was a felt need. Nearly, 50 per cent of the trainees had taken up self-employment and the programmes were intended to impart to the trainees vocational skills on a par with international standards.
