dated February 14, 1953: Self-government for Sudan

Britain and Egypt signed on the 12th in Cairo a pact giving self-government to Sudan which they had ruled jointly for 53 years. The pact was signed by Egypt's Premier, General Mohammed Naguib, and Sir Ralph Stevenson, British Ambassador. The pact provided for the Sudanese to choose, within three years, whether they wanted full independence or to have some link with Egypt, their powerful neighbour to the North. During the transition period, the eight million people of the rich cotton growing land were to govern themselves. However, Foreign Affairs and Defence would be under the direction of a Governor-General. British Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden, told the House of Commons in London, "This is a reasonable settlement. This question had bedevilled our relations with Egypt and made the future of Sudan uncertain. I hope this is a happy augury for the future well-being of the Sudanese, and it will also benefit Anglo-Egyptian relations."
