10 students injured as roof collapses

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA Feb. 13 . At least 10 first standard students of the Government Higher Primary School at Durgigudi here were injured, one of them seriously, when a portion of the concrete roof fell on them.Class was in progress when the incident occurred at around 11 a.m.

The seriously injured student was admitted to the McGann Hospital while others were treated as outpatients.

The DDPI, A. Deva Prakash, and the Block Education Officer, G.P. Chandramma, who visited the spot, held emergency meeting on the repairs to be taken up immediately. The meeting asked the PWD engineer to prepare a blueprint for the immediate repair of the building. It also decided to vacate four classrooms as they were also found to be unsafe.

The school, which was started in 1932, was running primary and higher primary classes.

It was hard pressed for space when the secondary section was opened in 1993.

Meanwhile, the proposal to construct another floor on the existing building has come in for criticism by the old students' association, considering the dilapidated condition of the structure.
