Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
The Mayor, J.Chandra, told The Hindu today that the programme would be implemented jointly by the corporation and Kudumbashree. The council had also approved the programme. On an experimental basis, the programme would be implemented in the Medical College, Medical College-East, Fort, P.T.P.Nagar, Gowreesapattom areas and those wards coming under the Poojapura circle. Various voluntary organisations including EDIT have come forward to implement the programme in different parts of the city, she said. The corporation has sought the cooperation of the residents associations to collect solid waste from households. Trained women members of Kudumbashree would collect the refuse from various points in the city according to a fixed schedule in specially designed autorickshaws and take them to the dumping yards in Chalai and Manacaud. They would be provided with uniform and gloves, she said. The corporation has decided to use autorickshaws to clear the refuse on byroads as well as the main roads. After collecting the refuse from each locale, the women can either take it to the dumping yards or can transfer to the corporation lorries that would reach each point at a specified time. The lorries would either transport the garbage to the treatment plant at Vilappilsala or to the farms in the suburbs of the city. The women in Kudumbashree would run the autorickshaws and also collect the refuse. A sum of Rs.25 would be collected from each house to implement the programme. The women would collect the refuse in two shifts either in the morning or evening on all days except Sundays. A preliminary survey would be conducted in the city to implement the programme, she said.
