Education U.K., on Feb. 14, 15

EDUCATION U.K. comes back to Bangalore on February 14 and 15; it will be held at Taj Residency.

As more people travel abroad in search of degree courses, a recent study forecasts that global demand for overseas study will increase four-fold in the next quarter century. The number of Indian students studying in the U.K. in 2003-04 is expected to be over 10,000. To meet this huge demand, British Council India is organising this fair. Over 140 academicians from 65 leading U.K. institutions are expected to be present. American Express Travellers' Cheques and Air India are supporting the event.

A survey conducted in the U.K. shows that a majority of Indian students coming there are studying these subjects: management, engineering, art & design, computing and media studies. More MBA students are educated in Britain than in the rest of Europe put together and U.K. business schools are both world renowned and closely linked with commerce and industry. U.K.'s reputation in the world of business has resulted in its exceptional strength in the teaching of MBAs.

What is less known is that U.K. has some of the finest art and design colleges in the world and that they have produced some of the greatest artists and designers, both past and present. Another popular subject among Indian students is the media, a growing, increasingly wide-ranging field. Journalism, public relations, advertising, communication studies, information management, broadcasting, TV, and film are some of the subjects

Com-Vision 2003

Com-Vision 2003, "The mega event in search of talent" held by the Commerce Faculty of Bangalore University was a really major affair with students for 16 colleges of seven universities of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh participating.

"Extempor", a battle of wisdom, was the first event in which 11 colleges participated. Vishwanath, Prabath Bhatt, and M.M.Vaggannavar formed the jury. An exciting brainstorming session, The UG Quiz, was conducted by Rajesh, Commerce lecturer in Mount Carmel College.

"Bulls and Bears", an exclusive event involving stock market trading was the first event of the afternoon session. To add charm to this festival of business, Samanvaya, a cultural extravaganza, was held in the evening.

Product Launch, Mock Press Meet and PG Quiz were other events.

Teachers protest

The Federation of University and College Teachers' Associations in Karnataka (FUCTAK) feels the existence of private aided degree colleges is in danger with the official committee appointed by the Government under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary recommending a comprehensive review of the grant-in-aid system for higher education.

FUCTAK feels some of the proposals are especially detrimental to the aided colleges. An "exit policy" has been suggested to phase out grant-in-aid for 10-year-old colleges in the cities and 15-year-old colleges in rural areas, within the next five years. The present salary grant system for teachers is to be replaced by a student-centred grants system based on a number of students appearing for the final examination, in both existing and new colleges. The salary and allowances of the existing staff will not be reduced but these colleges will be given powers to collect higher fees from their students.
