Bureaucrat's 'audacity' flayed

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Feb. 12. The Janakeeya Kala Sahithya Vedi, a voluntary organisation, has expressed its astonishment over the `audacity' of a top civil servant in using offensive language against the writers who had participated in a meeting organised in Aluva to protest against the move to privatise the Periyar waters.

The Vedi was reacting to the reported remark of the managing director of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, Jiji Thomson, that the writers were trying to "communalise'' the Periyar issue.

In a statement here today, the Vedi said the remark was despicable and also an insult to the writers and the people of the State. Mr. Jiji Thomson, who was the chief organiser of the Global Investor Meet (GIM), had reasons for his grievance against the popular protest against the industrial water supply schemes utilising the waters of Periyar and Malampuzha. These schemes had to be dropped from the list of projects showcased at the GIM because of the public outcry.

``His disappointment is understandable. But he has no business to attribute such motives to the people who oppose the moves to commercialise the natural resources of the State,'' the Vedi said.
