Andhra Pradesh
By K.M. Dayashankar
After a gap of nearly eight years, Janashakthi naxalites attacked the police in the district. The first incident of attacking the police in the district took place in 1990 when the naxalites shot dead a Medipalli police station constable, S. Rajanna at Oded village when he went to serve summons in the village. Another incident took place in 1995 with the killing of the Metpally SI, Kranthi Kiran. The killing of the two constables -- Henku Naik and Srinivas -- in the tribal hamlet of Vattimalla by the group has become a sticky issue for the police. After the surrender of the 46 armed Janashakthi naxalites, the police had organised a `Nimmajanam' (immersion) mela in Vemulawada last year to announce liberation of all Janashakthi militants from police records and liberation of the Sircilla division from the clutches of Janashakthi activities. However, during the recent past several surrendered naxalites joined the Janashakthi and strengthened regrouped the organisation by forming three dalams -- viz Sanugula rythanga , Naveen and Sardar -- with a total of 25 to 30 cadres. But, the villagers of Rangampet and Adavipadira which are hotbed of Janashakti activities in Yellarreddypet mandal have raised the banner of revolt against naxalites by taking an oath not to allow any extremists into their village. Meanwihle, the latest incident assumes significance as it comes close on the heels of the Janashakthi State leader, K Rajanna's statement that the party had decided to adopt an offensive strategy to strengthen the movement. The two constables went to the interior tribal hamlet without informing the local police and this proved fatal for them.
