Karunanidhi Madurai visit may provide healing touch

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI FEB. 12. The proposed visit by the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, here on February 23 is expected to provide a "healing touch" to the party, plagued by factionalism.

However, describing his first visit after the 2001 Assembly elections as a "private" affair, the party organiser in Madurai, C. Kaverimaniam, said Mr. Karunanidhi would release a book at a function to be attended by a select group of invitees, including Tamil scholars.

But cadres say the visit comes at a crucial time, when the leadership has already taken some major steps to put an end to `infighting'.

Undeterred by "internal problems", the workers down the line have been showing their strength and unity on issues, be it the "gruel-biryani" clash at Sellur or the massive demonstration against the "anti-people" policies of the Government.

Mr. Karunanidhi's visit comes a day before electioneering ends in Sattankulam. The cadres are still awaiting `directions' on the Assembly byelection.
