Official sources here said that initially the scheme provided a compensation of Rs. 5,000 to the next of kin of the victim if the family's annual income did not exceed Rs. 11,000. In 2000, the Government raised the compensation to Rs. 10,000. The compensation was being paid to the victim's family after the authority concerned, such as the tahsildar, certified that the family was eligible for the relief. The sources said that 1,400 such eligible poor families (approved by the Government) in the district were waiting for the compensation for over a year.
Rs. 1.4 cr. to be paid
The total amount payable to the families is Rs. 1.4 crore. And, the administration has withheld the applications of another 300 families for the time being to ensure that the 1,400 families get the compensation first. Since the scheme was started, around 700 families had been paid compensation in the district, a senior official said. He said that though the administration had written to the authorities concerned, funds had not been released. Members of the poor families who had lost their breadwinner were making rounds to the offices for over a year seeking compensation. Though the scheme was still in force, no reasons had been given for the non-release of funds, the official said.
