Uddhav's bid to woo Dalits

By Arunkumar Bhatt

MUMBAI Feb. 12. In his first political move after being formally elected working president of the Shiv Sena, Uddhav Thackeray, has extended an olive branch to the Dalits of Maharashtra and that too a hawk among their leaders, the RPI president, Ramdas Athavale.

But the latter's response was lukewarm. Mr. Athavale advised the junior Thackeray to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, the late Prabodhankar, and not his father, Bal Thackeray. The occasion was the unveiling of Prabodhankar's portrait at the Marathi department of Bombay University at the hands of his grandson in the presence of many Dalit leaders, including Mr. Athavale.
