Remand extended

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD FEB.11.

Moulana Hussain Umaraji, moulvi of the local mosque in Godhra and accused of plotting the Sabarmati Express train carnage in which 58 "Ram sevaks'' were burnt alive on February 27 last year, was today remanded to police custody for two more days.

The Moulana's arrest last week in a pre-dawn swoop evoked strong protest from the minority community in Godhra. Almost all the shops and business establishments in the minority-dominated areas in the town remained closed for five days and the relief camp organisers and others took out a silent protest rally and submitted a memorandum to the Panchamahals district collector demanding his early release.
