Impressive Sanaa makes final

CHANDIGARH FEB. 7. It could well have been the title clash in the girls' section of the Grade-3 ITF Junior tennis tournament at the CLTA courts here on Friday.

In a contest that lasted two hours and 35 minutes, third-seeded Sanaa Bhambri scored a deserving 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (12/10) win and entered the final. On Saturday, Sanaa will fight it out with Thai fourth seed Thassha Vitayaviroj who ousted the top seed Montinee Tangphong on Thursday.

Somdev takes singles title

In the boys' section, the second-seeded Somdev Dev Varman took the title without much fuss. After winning a gruelling three-setter semifinal against Chatwinder Singh, Varman was to meet the Ukrainian fourth seed Dimitri Tolok in the evening. Varman was 1-2 down when Tolok conceded the match with an upset stomach and fever.

In the morning session, Tolok defeated the top seed Karan Rastogi, 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 10 minutes. A few line calls went against Rastogi and the Indian lost his cool.

The results: Boys singles (Final): 2-Somdev Dev Varman bt 4-Dimitri Tolok (Ukr) 1-2 (conceded).

Semifinals: Tolok bt 1-Karan Rastogi 6-4, 6-1; Varman bt 3-Chatwinder Singh 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Boys' doubles (final): 3-Jamie Murray (Gbr) and Vikas Punna bt Chatwinder Singh and Dominic Inglot (Gbr) 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Girls singles (semifinals): 3-Sanaa Bhambri bt 7-Yana Nemerovski (Isr) 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (12/10). Doubles (final): Efrat Zlotikman (Isr) and Yana Nemerovski (Isr) w/o 4-Shin Jung-Yoon (Kor) and Anastasia Zhukova (Rus).
