U.S. for tranquillity at LoC in summer

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON FEB. 7. The United States does not wish to see escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan across the Line of Control during summer.

The Secretary of State, Colin Powell, said this during a testimony at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Against the backdrop of rising tensions with Iraq, the Republican Senator, Chuck Hagel, wondered if the Bush administration was also keeping track of other problem areas such as North Korea, the Indian subcontinent and West Asia. Gen. Powell said he had been spending a great deal of time on all other issues, including the one in the subcontinent.

"I met again for the second time in five days with the Foreign Minister of Pakistan. We talked about these issues and talked about the fact we managed to calm things down last year," he added. ``We don't want to see spring coming and tensions escalate again across the Line of Control and that has been a subject of considerable discussion," Gen. Powell said.
