Hurriyat denies charges, seeks probe

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR FEB. 7. The All-Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has strongly reacted to the allegations that it was receiving money from the Pakistan Embassy. It sought an impartial probe into the allegations by the former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, the human rights activist, Ravi Nair, and journalist Kuldip Nayar.

Stating that it was an attempt to bring the Hurriyat under pressure, the senior executive member and JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik, said that the money recovered from the Hurriyat's Delhi bureau in-charge, Shabir Ahmed Dar, was purely meant for office expenses and not "a gift for the Hurriyat chairman, Abdul Gani Bhat''. Mr. Dar showed them the cheque book and got the money from his office. These expenses, Mr. Malik said, were being borne by the Hurriyat's Srinagar headquarters. He condemned the Government's actions and said "the Hurriyat executive will meet and discuss the future of the Delhi office''.
