Visvesvaraya awards announced

Bangalore Feb. 7. The State Government has selected two former professors at the Indian Institute of Science, H.N. Ramachandra Rao and Hombegowda Sharatchandra, for the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Award for senior scientists, in recognition of their contributions to science and technology.

While Prof. Rao, a former member of the Union Public Service Commission and professor of Electro-Technology at the IISc., gets the award for 2000, Prof. Sharatchandra, a former professor and director of the Centre for Human Genetics at the IISc., gets it for 2001. The latter is the son of the former chief justice of the erstwhile Mysore High Court, Hombe Gowda, and son-in-law of the former chief minister, Kadidal Manjappa.

The Government has also selected 21 young scientists for the awards, also named after Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

Those selected for the awards for 2000 are : R. Ramachandra Rao (National Aerospace Laboratory), R.K. Somashekar (Life Sciences, Bangalore University), Mahanthappa S. Jogad of Sharanabasaveshwara College, Gulbarga (Physical Sciences), Hemmige S. Yathirajan and P. Nagaraj of the University of Mysore (Chemical Sciences), Ravishankar Nanjundaiah of IISc. (Earth Sciences), Basavaraj V. Patil of the University of Agricultural Sciences Extension Centre, Raichur (Agricultural Sciences), V. Ravi of NIMHANS, Bangalore (Medical Science), Ranganathan Villamguppam Tatachari of IISc. (Engineering), V. Vinay of IISc. (Computer Science) and A.S. Vasudeva Murthy of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mathematics).

The young scientists selected for the 2001 award are: J.C. Anupama of IISc. (Aeronautical Engineering), K.S. Jagannatha Rao of CFTRI, Mysore (Life Sciences), N. Suryaprakash of IISc. (Physical Sciences), V.V. Suresh Babu, Bangalore University (Chemical Sciences), B.R. Manjunath, Mangalore University (Earth Sciences), Mahadev B. Chetty of UAS, Dharwad (Agricultural Sciences), C.N. Manjunath, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, Bangalore (Medical Science), K. Narayana Prabhu, Regional Engineering College, Suratkal (Engineering), Jayant Ramaswamy Harithsa (Computer Science), and Basudev Datta of IISc. (Mathematics).

The awardees were selected by a committee headed by the Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Roddam Narasimha. The awards will be presented by the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, on February 28.

The awards instituted for senior scientists also include prize money of Rs. 50,000 each and those for young scientists, Rs. 20,000 each.
