Poojary's appointment widely welcomed

Bangalore Feb. 7. The appointment of B. Janardhana Poojary, MP, as the next President of the KPCC has been widely welcomed in Congress circles, and the AICC has come in for praise for the choice.

Besides praising the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, for the appointment, a few have also thanked the Minister for Urban Development D.K. Shivakumar, who has been active in party affairs in the past few years, for the selection.

The KPCC spokesman and General Secretary, V.S. Ugrappa, thanked the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, the AICC General Secretary in charge of the State, Vayalar Ravi, and the Chief Minister for his appointment.

In a statement issued along with another General Secretary, Veeranna Mathikatti, Mr. Ugrappa was confident that Mr. Poojary would strengthen the party and stand up to the opportunism of the Opposition parties and the communal forces. Mr. Poojary was known for his concern for social justice, organisational abilities, probity, and effective leadership. Mr. Ugrappa has also recorded his praise for the leadership provided by the incumbent President, Allum Veerabhadrappa, in the past ten months.

The PCC General Secretary, Prakash Rathod, and Secretary, P.M. Ashok, thanked Ms. Gandhi, the AICC general secretaries, Oscar Fernandes and Mr. Ravi, and the Chief Minister for the appointment. Mr. Poojary's programmes for assisting the poor, implemented when he was a Union minister, were model ones, they said.

Two other PCC general secretaries, H. Anjaneya and K. Vijayakumar Shetty, have said that besides the AICC leaders, the Chief Minister and Mr. Shivakumar should be given the credit for the appointment of Mr. Poojary.

The Congress MP for Kolar, K.H. Muniyappa, whose name had also figured among those considered for the party post, has said Mr. Poojary's leadership would enthuse the backward classes and dalits in the party.

The Minister of State for Fisheries and Ports, Vasanth V. Saliyan, has said that Mr. Poojary is a unique politician known for discipline, integrity, and ability. His appointment would strengthen the hands of the Chief Minister.

The Chairperson of the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation and former minister, Manorama Madhwaraj, has said in a congratulatory letter to Mr. Poojary that she hoped he would carry all sections of the party with him. His rich experience in public life would benefit the Congress.

The PCC General Secretary, T.V. Maruthi, and Secretary, A. Kenche Gowda, have said that one and all in the Congress would welcome Mr. Poojary's appointment.

The PCC Joint Secretary, Satish K. Mallanna, and Secretary, Girija Maheshan, have said the choice is welcome in particular to the dedicated party workers and also the women members.

Others to welcome the appointment are M. Muniswamy, MLA for Shantinagar in Bangalore; the PCC secretaries, E.S. Chandrashekar and B.S. Paramashivaiah; the Chairman of the Leather Industry Development Corporation, B.N. Chandrappa; the former MLAs from Mysore District, D. Kariappa Gowda and Chikkamadu; M.V. Krishnamurthy, Seva Dal leader from Mysore; and Shafiullah, member of the BDA.
