Malai. Subramanian retires

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI FEB. 7 . Justice Malai. Subramanian of the Madras High Court retired today, bringing the strength of the court down to 30, as against the sanctioned number of 42.

Appointed district judge on November 16, 1987, Mr. Justice Subramanian was appointed additional judge of the court on September 27, 2000. He was Registrar of the High Court between 1996 and May 1999.

Though five more judges of the court are scheduled to attain superannuation during this calendar year alone, the fate of the list of 11 names forwarded by the Chief Justice B. Subhashan Reddy in April last for appointment, as judges is still not known.

Meanwhile, amidst reports that only nine out of the 11 names had been cleared by the Supreme Court collegium for appointment, senior counsel Sriram Panchu pulled out of the race.

He formally conveyed his decision to the Chief Justice in the third week of January.

Now, out of the total 12 vacancies, nine are meant to be filled with nominees selected from serving district judges, while three are to be from the Bar.
