AIADMK foes must be vigilant: Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Feb. 7 . The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today said those opposing the AIADMK in the Sattankulam constituency should be vigilant and point out instances of ``misuse'' of powers to the Election Commission.

Listing the misuse of powers as highlighted in the media and instances of development works now under way in the Assembly constituency, he said only if vigil was kept, could there be a small check on the ``gigantic scale of irregularities''.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the AIADMK Government had backtracked on many issues in the past. For instance, after having declared that there was no question of rethink on noon meal for farmers, the Government conceded the Opposition demand for supply of rice. In another instance, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, criticised a Madras High Court decision in the Assembly and the very next day, came out with a clarification in the House.

In the 2001 Governor's address it was announced that the farmers' markets (Uzhavar Sandhai), introduced by the DMK Government, would be closed. Later, she changed this stand and said that only those markets which were not functioning well would be shut down.
