`Globalisation has led to corruption'

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD FEB. 7. The former Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member, E.K. Nayanar, today said that globalisation had brought forth corruption in the country.

This was evident in the Bofors scam, share market scam, Enron deal, Tehelka.Com and the disinvestment of public sector undertakings. It has also corrupted a good section of the political leadership in the country, he said.

Inaugurating a seminar on `Effects of Globalisation on Civil Service', organised as part of the national conference of School Teachers Federation of India here, Mr. Nayanar said the import of agriculture products had led to a steep fall in prices of cash crops in Kerala.

The annual loss to Kerala was Rs.6,000 crores on rubber, coconut and tea.

Unless the policy of globalisation accompanied by liberalisation and privatisation was changed, the crisis in the agriculture sector would not end.

He said that in the final analysis, globalisation was economic imperialism in disguise with all the dangers involved in it. He said the ill-effects and dangers of globalisation policies on the Indian economic system had been tremendous.

Multinational companies and Indian monopolists had amassed huge profit out of the liberal import policies, disinvestment of public sector undertakings and concessions given to foreign capital investment, he said.

The seminar was presided over by the CITU State secretary, M. Chandran, and addressed by Sukumol Sen, general secretary of the All India State Government Employees Federation, among others.
