Fee structure: two unaided medical colleges agree

Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM FEB. 7. No agreement could be reached between the Pushpagiri Medical College, Thiruvalla, and the Government on the fee structure for the unaided medical colleges at the talks held here today.

The other two colleges -- Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolenchery, and the Dr. Somerwell Memorial Medical College, Karakonam, Thiruvananthapuram, agreed to a annual fee of Rs. 1.5 lakh per student and a 50 per cent management quota.

The Principal Secretary (Higher Education), K. Mohandas, who met the college authorities on a directive from the High Court, will continue his discussions with the Pushpagiri College on Monday.

The Government would submit its statement before the High Court on the revised fee structure it was proposing on Tuesday. The case is to come up before the Court again on February 13.

During the discussions, the Pushpagiri College presented an estimate of Rs. 4.38 lakhs as their training cost per student per year. The Kolencheri College gave an estimate of Rs. 4 lakhs per student per year where as the cost in Government medical colleges was only 1.5 lakhs per student per year. The Karakonam college did not dispute the cost of 1.5 lakhs. The Kolenchery college agreed to an annual fee of Rs. 1.5 lakhs though it cited higher expenses.

The colleges have said that their staff pattern and training costs were on the pattern of the Government Medical Colleges. Official sources, however, said that this needed to be looked into in detail. The Government had earlier fixed an annual fee of Rs. 28,750 and this had been challenged by the colleges in the Court. The Court directed the Government to discuss the matter with the colleges and review the fee proposed.
