BJP cuts short meet

CUDDAPAH Feb. 7. The three-day BJP State Executive meeting at Cuddapah has been pruned to two days and would conclude with a public meeting on Saturday evening, in view of the State bandh called by the party in protest against the `Jehadi' terrorism, said the BJP spokesman, Parakala Prabhakar, on Friday.

Briefing newsmen on the State office-bearers meeting held `in camera' at the ZP Common Entrance Exam meeting hall here earlier, Mr. Prabhakar said that the meeting condemned the Jehadi terrorist organisation, which slaughtered as many as 250 persons in the State and charged the State Government with being inept in curbing terrorist acts. The resolution would demand banning of the DJS, and invoking POTA against the members of the organisation who were nabbed. The bandh was called to garner public support and exert pressure on the Government to ban the organisation.

The former BJP national president, Bangaru Lakshman, the State president, Chilakam Ramachandra Reddy, the Southern States' in charge, Venugopala Reddy, the BJP Floor Leader in the Assembly, N. Indrasena Reddy, the deputy leader, K. Laxman national secretary, N. Ganesan, the all-India Dalita Morcha vice-president, P. Penchalaiah, the State Mahila Morcha president, Jhansi Rani, the State office in charge, Shyamji, and the State Panchayat Raj Cell convenor, N. Thulasi Reddy, were among the prominent leaders who attended the meeting. The BJP national president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, and Central Ministers of the State would attend the State executive meeting on Saturday.

A resolution pertained to the severe drought situation, drinking water and fodder scarcity and another on the State financial position in dire straits. The party's membership drive which ended on January 31 was also reviewed, besides chalking out the State party's programmes over the next three to four months, Mr. Prabhakar said. Efforts would be made to attract artisans, fishermen, Dalits and poor persons towards the BJP, he said.

Dr. K. Laxman said meetings would be held at Kamalapuram on February 15 on `100 years of reservations' and at Guntur on February 16, followed by Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Medak and Ranga Reddy, to arouse public consciousness on ensuring social justice to the downtrodden, employment and education. He charged that other political parties were treating Dalits as mere vote banks. The SC/ST promotion policy was not adopted in the State and thousands of backlog posts remained unfilled.
