Navy interested in Orion?
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE
Feb. 7.
The Indian Navy may be interested in P3C Orion, a land-based marine patrol aircraft, sold by the American firm, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, maker of the F-16 fighter aircraft.
The company's representatives at the Aero India 2003 trade show told presspersons that they had been "talking to the Navy for a year" about the Orion. The Navy might be interested in between eight and 12 aircraft, they said.
It was equipped with "sonobouys and magnetic anomaly detection capability" which made it suitable for anti-submarine warfare. The company also wanted to sell its F-16 fighter aircraft and the C-130J transport aircraft to India.
Lockheed Martin was also looking at the possibility of launching ISRO's satellites on its launch vehicles, company officials said.
