Ex-DGP in court

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI FEB. 7. The retired Director-General of Karnataka Police, C. Dinakar, appeared in a magistrate court here in connection with a defamation complaint initiated against him for his `defamatory remarks' in his book — `Veerappan's Prize Catch: Rajkumar'.

Mr. Dinakar told the VI Metropolitan Magistrate, M. Sambasivam, that he would prove every word found in his book. Stating that he had sufficient evidence, he said his narration in the book was `100 per cent true'. The Magistrate then posted the matter to April 11 for further hearing.

The printer and publisher of the controversial book — M/s. Konark Publishers (P) Limited, Delhi and M/S Rashtra Printers, Delhi — also appeared in the court today. In his petition, the Editor of the Tamil biweekly Nakheeran, R.R. Gopal has denied any knowledge about the alleged payment of ransom running to crores of rupees, and said he had agreed to negotiate Rajkumar's release from Veerappan's custody only after a joint request from the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Governments.
