Sensex slips 26 points

MUMBAI FEB. 7. Equities, led by Reliance, declined sharply on heavy profit booking by local operators and institutional investors on the Bombay Stock Exchange pushing the Sensex down by 26 points to close below the 3300 mark today.

The 30 stock BSE Sensex opened at the day's high of 3309.46, fell to the day's low of 3277.33, before finishing below the 3300 mark at 3279.77 points, netting a decline of 25.67 points. The broad-based BSE-100 index closed lower by 11.71 points at 1623.81.

Dealers said players were seen engaged in profit-booking in heavyweights at higher levels. Index heavyweight Reliance suffered a major setback due to selling pressure.

The RIL scrip closed lower by Rs. 4.45 at Rs. 280.30, pulling the Sensex down by 7.6 points, analysts said. The FMCG major Hindustan Lever, Infosys, SBI and ITC have contributed 10 points to the 26-point fall in the benchmark index, they said. — UNI
