U.S. Move to Blockade Chinese Coast?

The British Government said in London that the possibility of an American sponsored blockade of the China coast had "not been raised" during Prime Minister Churchill's visit to the United States. A Whitehall spokesman said so, commenting on Washington press reports that the possibility was under discussion. Diplomatic quarters in London believed that Britain was strongly opposed to a blockade of the China Coast. Foreign Secretary Mr. Anthony Eden had indicated in Parliament that, following the visit to London by the American Secretary of State Mr. John Foster Dulles, there would be Anglo-American consultations before further changes of policy in the Far East. Britain had strong stakes in that area, and feared it could suffer the loss of Hong Kong, and its rich trade with China.
