Cong. list 'tampered'

By Javed M. Ansari

NEW DELHI JAN. 31. The central election committee of the Congress party met for the second successive day today in a desperate bid to finalise its list of candidates for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. The meeting came in the backdrop of allegations of "tampering" in the candidates' list cleared by the screening committee.

According to several senior State leaders, the list placed before the central election committee was not the one cleared by the screening committee, with almost a dozen names deleted and replaced overnight.

The issue came to light after the screening committee meeting on Wednesday night to finalise the list. Several ticket-aspirants and State leaders protested at the AICC headquarters. The party high command, especially Sonia Gandhi, has taken a serious view of the development.
