By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Jan. 31. The Governor, S.S. Barnala, on Friday underlined the need for propagating the values of general reading among people in the larger interest of education and culture. He was speaking after inaugurating the XVII Hyderabad Book Fair at the Nizam College Grounds here.

Addressing an impressive gathering, he said the basic urge of man to know things. "The urge makes man read books not only for education but also for entertainment and enlightenment. Books alone serve these needs."

"A university, a library and a book exhibition were more beautiful than other earthly things around us. People, who love learning go to university and those who love reading go to library. But those who love learning, reading and books in general go to book exhibition," he said complimenting the efforts of the Hyderabad Book Fair Society (HBFS) in coming up with a grand show year after year.

The Mayor, Teegala Krishna Reddy, said the written alphabet was indestructible. "When we were children, we were taught to preserve books. Unfortunately, the practice was slowly vanishing among children these days'', he said.

The Vice-Chancellor, Maulana Azad national Urdu University, S.A. Wahab, said that despite the invasion of the electronic media, the print media, comprising newspapers and books, still retained their charm.
