Work on new bus terminus to begin by May

By B.S. Ramesh

BANGALORE Jan. 31. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will commence construction of its inter-State bus terminus on Mysore Road in April or May this year.

The KSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, K. Jairaj, says that the "concept plan" for the Rs. 19.6-crore bus terminus is ready, and it has been submitted to the KSRTC Board.

The bus stand will come up on the land which once belonged to the Mysore Chrome Tanning Company. The KSRTC is already operating some services to Mysore from there.

The Mysore Road terminus was conceived sometime ago as one of the four "satellite bus-termini", to reduce congestion at the Kempe Gowda Bus Stand in the Majestic area. The KSRTC feels that smaller termini on Mysore Road, Tumkur Road, Old Madras Road, and Hosur Road will not only ease the pressure on the Kempe Gowda terminus but also enable it to provide better service to passengers.

Mr. Jairaj says the sophisticated multi-storeyed bus terminus will be constructed in 18 months after the work begins. The KSRTC is likely to call for tenders shortly. The work will be taken up in phases.

Once completed, almost all services to the south, including Mysore, Madikeri, Hassan, and Kerala will be shifted to the Mysore Road terminus. The KSRTC is planning to construct the terminus in such a manner that it will meet the requirements for 15 to 20 years.

The KSRTC Chief Engineer, Jagadish Chandra, says the terminus will be able to handle 400 schedules a day and that it will have at least 20 departure bays. There will be facilities for the departure of 22 buses at the same time.

The terminus will have facilities for passengers, including multi-level car parking, subways, and an over-bridge for pedestrians. Escalators will be installed for the use of the aged and the disabled.

Many other amenities for better passenger comfort, such as state-of-the-art waiting rooms, signages, seating, passenger information system, and stalls have been planned.

To make it a self-sustaining project, the KSRTC has planned a 60,000 sq.ft. commercial complex. The complex will have modern food courts, automobile showrooms, play homes for children, and space for offices. The rental from the commercial complex will help the KSRTC maintain the terminus.

The KSRTC is making efforts to identify land for satellite bus-termini on Hosur Road, Old Madras Road, and Tumkur Road.
