Govt. to press for HC Bench in capital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN. 31. The Government would continue to press the Kerala High Court for clearance to set up a Bench of the Court in the capital, the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, told the Assembly today.

Replying to a submission by B. Vijayakumar (Cong.), the Chief Minister said the High Court had sought details of the expenditure being incurred by the Government for filing cases in the High Court. The departments had been told to submit details of cases and the relevant expenditure, but the information was only trickling in. For instance, the Education Department forwarded data applicable to it only on Thursday, he said.

Mr. Antony said the Chief Justice had informed the Government on December 15, 1999, that the High Court's views on the subject would be communicated after a Full Court reference. The Registrar's letter seeking information regarding expenditure being incurred by the Government for handling cases in the High Court had come subsequently.

Replying to a submission by Raju Abraham (CPI- M), the Chief Minister appealed to the missionaries arriving to secure appropriate visas for the purpose. He also informed the House that the police had arrested one person in connection with the attack on the Indian Pentecostal Church at Ambalavayal in Wayanad.

The Irrigation Minister, T. M. Jacob, told Mr. Varkala Kahar (Cong.) that the Government would issue instructions to the officials not to go ahead with the sea wall construction at the Papanasam beach. Replying to a submission by K. C. Joseph (KC-J), the Irrigation Minister said the Government would ensure that shutters of the Thanneermukkom bund remained firmly closed to avert salt influx into Kuttanad.
