Govt. staff may get better deal

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN. 31. The Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, has dropped broad hints that the Government would soon come up with a better deal for Government employees in the context of the improving financial health of the State.

Inaugurating a function at the Thiruvananthapuram District Treasury relating to the utilisation of the amounts received under the Akshaya Nidhi lottery, the Finance Minister said that the Government was committed in giving all benefits which the Government employees were entitled to.

"All Government cheques have the value of currency and it is the responsibility of the Government to ensure the value of its cheques. The Government has been taking several steps on a priority basis to correct some of the lapses in the handling of the treasuries in the previous years. But we don't want to continue blaming the previous Government for this,'' he said, adding that the Government was progressively clearing several of its financial burdens.

He said that the Government was forced to delay the payment of several benefits to the employees owing to its financial constraints. The functioning of the treasury was slowly becoming normal and the financial situation would show improvement in time for the budget, he added.

Mr. Sankaranarayanan wanted the Treasury officials to be the flag-bearers of the Government's image as it was through Government employees that the Government's policy initiatives were translated to the common man. In this context, he wanted the Treasury officials to change their attitudes while dealing with pensioners and weaker sections of society who arrived at the treasuries.

The Minister announced that the Treasury computerisation programme would be completed by March end. He also promised the Treasury employees that the Government would clear the pending amounts due to them as incentives.

The Akshaya Nidhi lottery was a partial success, even though a section of the employees did not cooperate with it. He said that the Rs. 5 crores mobilised through the scheme had been transferred to the Chief Minister's relief fund. He congratulated the Treasury employees for fruitfully utilising the share due to them under the Akshaya Nidhi scheme. He thanked the officials who had participated in mobilising funds under the scheme.
