The Assistant Inspector General of Forests, T. P. Mishra, had sent a telegram to the State Forest Department a few days ago stating that the Ministry had decided to keep in abeyance the forest clearance granted by its Regional Office for using 1.25 hectares of forest for the work. The Inspector General claimed that deforestation was taking place at the site on account of the work. Official sources here said that this was far from true. The Government had invited tenders for cutting 57 trees on the land for constructing the weir. But, the tender was not awarded as the quotation was not acceptable to the Government. However, the Government has to comply with the order issued under the Forest (Conservation) Act. The Act provides for prosecution of the officials if they failed to protect the forests.
