`Research should benefit the masses'

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Jan. 31. The Governor, Sikandar Bakht, has suggested that appropriate changes be brought about in the curriculum so as to meet the requirements of the changing times.

Laying the foundation stone for the Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Department block on the Karivattom campus of the University of Kerala today, he stressed the need to reach to the common masses, the fruits of research works going on in the universities. There was a need to integrate different subjects and to promote inter-disciplinary studies and research, he added.

Kerala with a coastline stretching over 550 km offered tremendous potential for fisheries-related studies, which would eventually benefit millions of people, the Governor observed. The Kerala University proposed to implement a new land use pattern on its Kariavattom campus, informed the Vice-Chancellor, B. Ekbal, who presided over the function. The digital inventory mapping for this had already been prepared, he said.

A cricket stadium of international standards would soon come up at Kariavattom, with assistance from the Kerala Cricket Association. Better Internet facilities would be made available in the academic departments of the university. The BSNL would be approached for a leased line at a concessional rate, the Vice- Chancellor said.
