Indian boys do well

NEW DELHI JAN. 31. The Indian boys Arnav Jain, Agnel Gladwin and Kaushik Das made it to the semifinals of the first tournament of the ITF South Asian under-14 tennis tournament in Colombo.

The top-seeded Arnav dropped a solitary game in winning two rounds after a bye in the first. He beat Yasir Khan of Pakistan 6-0, 6-0 in pre-quarterfinals and the seventh-seeded Kohulan Ravindrakumar of Sri Lanka 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Arnav will meet compatriot, the sixth-seeded Kaushik Das, who beat Thangaraja Dineshkanthan of Sri Lanka 6-2, 6-3 and the third-seeded Djanibek Orazaliyev of Uzbekistan 6-0, 6-2 in that order after a bye in the first.

The second-seeded Agnel beat Ivan Lidzar of Kazakhstan 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 and Mohammed Umar Babar of Pakistan 6-2, 6-2 after a bye in the first. He will meet the fourth-seeded Kostantin Blank of Uzbekistan.

In doubles, the top-seeded Arnav and Agnel made the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Khurram Nazir of Pakistan and Itrat Hamid of Bangladesh.

Kaushik in partnershp with Thangarajah Dineshkanthan of Srilanka lost to Mayuresh Rajaratnam and Rukmal Cooray of Sri Lanka 3-6, 6-1, 4-6 in the first round.

In the girls section, Gayathri Krishnan went down 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 to the second-seeded Tatyana Ignatchenko of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals, after beating the eighth-seeded Amita Arudpragasam of Sri Lanka 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the earlier round.

Ashmitha Easwaramurthi and G. K. Shwetha also lost in the quarterfinals. Ashmitha lost to Vlada Ekshibarova of Uzbekistan 5-7, 1-6 after beating Fatima Al Nabhani of Oman 6-1, 6-0 while Shwetha went down 4-6, 0-6 to the seventh-seeded Kseniya Palkina of Kyrgyzstan after beating Thai Younten of Bhutan 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Gayathri and Ashmitha cruised into the semifinals, by beating Bincy Paramanathan and Ruchika Alahakoon of Srilanka 6-0, 6-0. Shwetha in partnership with Amita Arudpragasam of Sri Lanka lost to the top-seeded Tatyana Ignatchenko and Amina Rakhim of Kazakhstan 3-6, 2-6 after a bye.
