Vanniar Sangam demands probe into Sorapet violence

Pondicherry Jan. 31. The Pondicherry unit of the Vanniar Sangam has urged the Government to order a judicial probe into the Sorapet violence as it would bring to light all facts. A delegation on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy.

S.R. Govindarasu Padayatchi, president, and G. Ravi, secretary, told reporters here today that the total loss suffered by the land owners, belonging to the Vanniar community and others ran into nearly Rs. 50 lakhs.

They alleged that the victims of January 26 violence were treated as accused and 11 persons, including a grocery shop owner, were arrested under the Prevention of Atrocities against SC and ST Act for no fault of theirs.

They would also meet the Lt. Governor and make a detailed representation to him.

An extent of 30 acre sugarcane field, banana, several coconut trees, groundnut were burnt and more than ten submersible borewells damaged. The Administration should extend compensation to farmers who lost their property.

The Chief Minister was requested to intervene and prevent foisting of false cases on the clahs victims.
