Industrial harmony must for investment: Valsaraj

By Our Staff Reporter,

Karaikal Jan. 31. Industrial revolution alone will help Pondicherry government improve its revenue income, according to the Labour Minister, E.Valsaraj.

Inaugurating a seminar on `industrial harmony' organised by the Labour Department here today, the Minister said to achieve this goal, a conducive atmosphere for investment should be created. Normally, investment would be made at the places where harmonious situation prevails in the industrial sector.

If industrial growth would be in ascending order, it would result in creation of more jobs in areas where these units were to be set up. Moreover, industrialisation had become imperative for the government. At present, Central aid for running the government had been pegged at 51 per cent only and this might be reduced further if the Pondicherry government were to be asked to prepare its own budgetary allocations in the near future, Mr.Valsaraj said.

Already, the uniform tax structure had made a dent in revenue collection and government was not sure about the impact of the proposed value added tax structure to be implemented from April this year. In such a scenario, industrial revolution assumes greater importance, he said, and presented `industrial harmony' rolling shields to the SPIC-Henkel and Meirs Pharma companies situated in the Karaikal region.

Apart from attracting investments in industrial sector, the government was contemplating to revive the port at Pondicherry so that revenue could be generated through export and import operations. Hitherto, exporters and importers were relying on the services of the Madras Port where traffic was heavy. If the Pondicherry port were to be revived it would certainly act as an alternative to the Madras Port in this region, he said.

Later, participating in a seminar on `occupational safety and health', organised by the Chief Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers, the Minister said utmost importance should be given to the safety of employees. Periodical check of safety measures would help avoid major accidents.

Delivering the keynote address at a seminar on employment opportunities for school children organised by the Employment Exchange Department, Mr.Valsaraj said determination and general knowledge would help a person achieve his ambition. Motivation and awareness campaigns such as this seminar help students select their career.
