MTV USA apologises

Mumbai Jan. 31. Bowing to mounting public pressure, MTV USA today apologised for its `Clone High USA' programme, which showed Mahatma Gandhi in a poor light, according to a statement issued by the channel here today.

The statement said, "We have utmost respect for Gandhi and all that he represents as a revered Indian leader and one of the most important figures in world history."

It said, "The animated show parodies a number of important, historical figures from around the world, including the United States, where this form of comedy is common. We recognize and respect that various culturers may view this programming differently and we regret offence taken by the content in the show."

In the animated series `G-Man' is depicted as a clone of Gandhiji, who dangles ear-rings, likes junk food and goes `yo, yo man' and is the `ultimate' party animal.

The programme also caricatures some of the world's greatest names including Abraham Lincoln, Gautama Buddha, Joan of Arc and Cleopatra, who gather for a high school meet. — UNI
